  • Volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, 19th of April 2010. On 14th of April 2010 Eyjafjallajökull resumed erupting after a brief pause, this time from the top crater in the centre of the glacier, causing meltwater floods (also known as jökulhlaup) to rush down the nearby rivers, and requiring 800 people to be evacuated. This eruption was explosive in nature and is estimated to be ten to twenty times larger than the previous one in Fimmvörðuháls. This second eruption threw volcanic ash several kilometres up in the atmosphere which led to air travel disruption in northwest Europe for six days from 15 April 2010, including the closure of airspace over most of Europe.

  • The Aldeyjarfoss waterfall is situated in the north of Iceland at the northern part of the Sprengisandur Highland Road which means it is to be found within the Highlands of Iceland. One of the most interesting features of the waterfall is the contrast between the black basalt columns and the white waters of the fall. The river Skjálfandafljót drops here from a height of 20 m. The basalt belongs to a lava field called Frambruni or Suðurárhraun, hraun being the Icelandic designation for lava.

  • Veidivötn, The fishing lakes, a row of water filled explosion craters. These craters belong to a system of volcanic fissures reaching from Landmannalaugar in the south west, through Bardarbunga in the north west part of the Vatnajökull ice sheet, to Dynjguhals south of the volcanic massif Askja. A major eruption, the fourth largest in Iceland since the settlement, took place on this fissure system in 1477. Veiðivötn eru vatnaklasi á Landmannaafrétti, sem samanstendur af allt að fimmtíu vötnum, bæði smáum og stórum. Mörg vötnin eru sprengigígar sem mynduðust í Veiðivatnagosinu 1477.

  • Hiking in Kerlingarfjöll (1,477 m (4,846 ft)) mountain range in Iceland, situated in the Highlands of Iceland near the Kjölur highland road. The volcanic origin of these mountains is evidenced by the numerous hot springs and rivulets in the area. The earth is shimmering red in this area because of the volcanic rhyolite stone the mountains are composed of.

  • Golden evening rays backlight the blue icebergs on Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Jökulsárlón is situated in southeast Iceland, on the borders of Vatnajökull National Park. The lagoon stands 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq mi). It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland at over 248 metres (814 ft) depth as glacial retreat extended its boundaries.
